Hymen Examination

A hymen examination can be performed by an obstetrician-gynecologist.

You must be 18 years old to have a hymen examination. Our clinic does not perform this examination on anyone under 18, even with family consent.

A hymen examination is not like a routine exam — it is very brief.

It is not a painful examination. Patients are often understandably nervous about it. However, unlike a routine gynecological exam, it does not require the use of examination instruments such as a speculum.

Your doctor's examination of the area is very brief — sometimes checking the tension of the hymen and the width of any torn areas in order to explain the likelihood of bleeding and the overall condition.

A hymen examination takes about 1–2 minutes on average. You will not feel any pain or discomfort afterward.

After the examination, your doctor will give you detailed information about the condition of your hymen: Will bleeding occur again? What type of hymen do you have? What is the orientation of any tears (defects)?
