After IUD insertion: until the first period and month 3

After the IUD · procedure day to month 3

This guide covers each period, from the day the gold IUD is inserted to months 2–3 when the bleeding pattern settles, on a separate page: what to expect, what to watch for, when to call. The rules are the SoftCare Clinic doctor's own practice.

Short answer

What happens after IUD insertion until the first period, and when do things return to normal?

The gold IUD protects from the moment it is inserted. Cramps and spotting are common in the first days; there is no waiting period for sex, bathing or sport. At SoftCare Clinic the check-up is done 15 days later with ultrasound. The first period may be heavier than usual; the bleeding pattern settles in 2–3 months. Soaking one pad per hour that continues, fever, or feeling an object in the vagina means you should call.

Which rules apply after IUD insertion?

  • Sex: no waiting period.
  • Bath, pool, sea, sport, heavy lifting: no restriction.
  • Tampon and menstrual cup: allowed.
  • Painkillers: not needed for most women; may be given to women who have not given birth.
  • Antibiotics and other medicines: the doctor gives them when needed.
  • Check-up: 15 days later if there is no abnormality, with ultrasound.

  • Bleeding pattern: settles in 2–3 months.
  • Removal: no time rule; it is removed whenever you wish.

Is there a difference between women who have and have not given birth?

According to our clinic's doctor, the most important difference is during insertion. In a woman who has not given birth, the procedure can be painful if the right anesthesia is not chosen; in a woman who has given birth, the IUD can fall out if the right size is not chosen. Additional points for breastfeeding women are explained at the examination.

If you suspect pregnancy

Pregnancy with an IUD is very rare. If your period is late or you suspect pregnancy, our clinic follows up with a blood hCG test; the doctor decides whether an additional method is needed.
