Day 15 after IUD insertion: the check-up examination
Week 2 · check-up · After-IUD guide
Two weeks are up; your check-up appointment is today or in the coming days. For most women this is the last "official" step with the IUD; after that come annual examinations.
The only thing you need to bring to the check-up is a summary of the two weeks: how the bleeding went, whether you have cramps, whether anything bothered you.
Short answer
When is the check-up after IUD insertion, and what happens at the check-up?
At SoftCare Clinic, if there is no abnormality, the check-up examination is done 15 days after IUD insertion. The doctor confirms with ultrasound that the IUD is at the fundus, assesses the strings and listens to your complaints such as bleeding and cramps. The check-up is the real assurance that replaces a woman's own string check.
Day 15 check-up
At the check-up, the IUD's position at the fundus is confirmed with ultrasound.

What is done at the check-up?
- Ultrasound checks that the IUD sits in the uterine cavity, close to the fundus; the gold rings are easy to see on ultrasound.
- The strings are seen with a speculum; they are trimmed if needed.
- Complaints of bleeding, cramps and discharge are assessed; medication is given if needed.
- Your questions are answered: first period, sex, next check-up.
Going to the check-up
Having your period does not prevent the check-up; ultrasound can also be done during bleeding. Tell the doctor whether the spotting has decreased, whether you have cramps, and whether you feel the string. No new restriction on daily life is added after the check-up.
Is a check-up needed before day 15?
Our clinic's doctor says "15 days if there is no abnormality". Bleeding that soaks one pad per hour and continues, fever, foul-smelling discharge or feeling an object in the vagina are abnormalities; in these cases call without waiting for day 15.
Do
- Prepare a short summary of the two weeks in your head or on your phone.
- Ask about what to expect from your first period at the check-up.
Don't
- Don't skip the check-up because "I have no complaints"; the position can only be confirmed with ultrasound.
Special note
In women who have given birth
According to our clinic's doctor, the most important point in a woman who has given birth is choosing the right size; if the size is too small, the IUD can fall out. The ultrasound at the check-up also shows that the size fits the uterus.
When should you call?
Call the clinic right away
- Heavy bleeding: Soaking one pad per hour, and this continuing.
- Fever and foul-smelling discharge: Fever, weakness with fever, or foul-smelling discharge.
Call the clinic

Frequently asked questions
When is the IUD check-up done?
At SoftCare Clinic, if there is no abnormality, 15 days after IUD insertion. After that, it continues with annual gynecological examinations and smear/HPV follow-up.
Is ultrasound done at the IUD check-up?
Yes. The position is confirmed with ultrasound; IUDs with gold rings are easy to see on ultrasound. Our clinic relies on this method instead of a woman's own string check.
Can I go to the IUD check-up during my period?
Yes. Menstrual bleeding does not prevent the ultrasound or the string check.
