Abortion FAQ
Frequently asked questions about abortion
I've never given birth before, and this is my first abortion — will I be able to get pregnant again?
This belief, widely spread by word of mouth, is simply not true. When the vacuum aspiration technique is used by an experienced physician, the likelihood of complications is close to zero.
Can unmarried women have an abortion?
Unmarried women can actually have an abortion more easily than married women. Any unmarried woman who is 18 or older can have an abortion of her own accord.
Are free abortions available at public hospitals?
Unfortunately, the number of state-run teaching and research hospitals in Istanbul that perform abortions is barely a handful. Even where it is offered at some teaching hospitals, marriage is often a requirement, and the procedure is generally performed under local anesthesia.
Will my family find out that I had an abortion?
No — under patient rights, all of your information is kept strictly confidential (except at public hospitals).
