Day 19 after hymenoplasty: timing in relation to your planned date

Day 19 · permanent hymenoplasty, flap technique

Many patients plan the procedure with a particular date in mind. On day nineteen, the question that comes to mind is whether the time that has passed is enough. Rather than counting the remaining days, knowing what each period means helps you plan with more peace of mind.

On this page we explain together the average period given for healing, how long the stitches stay and why it is possible to have the procedure done in advance. Your doctor answers questions specific to your planned date.

In a graph with days on the horizontal axis, the spotting, pricking sensation and swelling lines descend towards day twenty.
The curve illustrates spotting, the pricking sensation and swelling decreasing over the first 20 days; it may not follow the same course in every patient.

The periods side by side

  • Healing takes 10–15 days on average.
  • A period of at least 2–3 weeks is needed after the procedure.
  • The stitches stay on the tissue for 25–35 days on average.
  • There is no restriction for a later date; the procedure can be done in advance.

Where does day 19 stand in this timeline?

Today you have passed the average healing range and are in the last days of the 2–3 week period. The average time the stitches stay is 25–35 days, so this period is not over yet today. The curve in the illustration shows, as a representation, that spotting, the pricking sensation and swelling have decreased in these days compared with the first days; if your own course is different, tell your doctor. The 15-day movement rule has generally ended; for the sea day 20 is awaited, and for the pool the follow-up examination.

Is there any drawback to having the procedure early?

No; the procedure can be done in advance for a later date, and there is no restriction for a later period. If your planned date is still far off, the time in between allows the healing and the follow-up examination to be completed. So you do not need to squeeze the procedure into a day close to the date; you can choose timing that comfortably covers the period of at least 2–3 weeks.

If your planned date is close

If your date is in the coming days, you need to talk to your doctor. We do not write on this page how long you need to wait for sexual intercourse and tampons; your doctor will tell you this period specifically. You can also settle the date of the follow-up examination in the same conversation. You do not need to wait for the check-up day for these questions; you can also ask by calling the clinic.

Do today

  • Share your planned date with your doctor.
  • Check whether the follow-up examination is before that date.
  • Ask your doctor about the waiting period for sexual intercourse and tampons.

Avoid today

  • Do not set the waiting period yourself based on general information from the internet.
  • Do not stretch the area in front of a mirror out of curiosity.
  • Do not skip the sea and pool rules because the date is getting close.

Call us if

  • If you have a discharge that keeps coming, is yellowish, smells different or that you find hard to describe, ask for a check-up appointment.
  • If a point about your planned date remains unclear, get in touch with your doctor.
