Day 23 after abortion: keeping in touch with the clinic from afar

Day 23 · Recovery after abortion

By day twenty-three some women have long left the city where the procedure was done: they have gone home, travelled elsewhere for work, gone to stay with family or set off on a holiday planned in advance.

The distance does not change the fact that you are the clinic's patient. Today's page explains whom to contact, in which situation and by which route while you are away; it also briefly recalls the rules about travel.

Short answer

If I am in another city or country, how do I contact the clinic after an abortion?

SoftCare Clinic's patients can reach a nurse or the doctor's assistant 24 hours a day, even from another city or country; when needed, they contact the doctor. In an emergency, first call the emergency number of the country you are in; if it is not an emergency, call the clinic. A video consultation can be arranged for patients who cannot come in; if a test is needed, it is arranged through a partner laboratory.

Today's topic on the calendar

By day 23 the waiting periods for the sea, the pool and the bath are over; when you are away, what really matters is knowing whom to contact.

A twenty-eight-day calendar; the days when the sea, pool and bath restrictions end are marked.

How do I reach the clinic when I am away?

Our clinic's own patients can reach the medical team 24 hours a day: a nurse or the doctor's assistant answers your call and, if needed, contacts the doctor. This applies whichever city or country you are in.

If you cannot come in person, a video consultation with the doctor can be arranged. If a test is needed, a solution is found through a laboratory the clinic works with; the medical team will explain how to proceed when you call.

Whom should I call first in an emergency abroad?

  • If you faint, call the emergency number first: 112 in Turkey, abroad the country's own emergency number.
  • If there is bleeding that soaks 2–3 pads in an hour, a temperature of 38 °C or above, severe pain that painkillers do not relieve, foul-smelling discharge or a clot the size of a golf ball, call the clinic straight away.
  • For dizziness, shivering, a hard abdomen or burning on urination, calling the clinic is enough.
  • For any question that is not urgent, contact the clinic directly.

Can you fly on the same day as an abortion?

Under our clinic's rule, you can fly on the day of the procedure; a long road journey in the passenger seat can also be made on the same day. If you have a special condition, your doctor will explain additional warnings and precautions separately.

A patient coming from abroad has the procedure on the first day and can return to her country the next day. Getting behind the wheel is subject to a separate rule; being a passenger and driving are not the same thing.

If you are on holiday, where do the water rules stand?

By day 23 the waiting periods, 15 days for the bath and the pool and day 10 at the earliest for the sea, are behind you.

Do today

  • Save the clinic's phone number in your contacts.
  • If you are abroad, find out the emergency number of the country you are in.
  • If your doctor gave you an extra warning about travel, note it down.
  • If you are going to ask for a video consultation, test your internet connection in advance.

Don't do today

  • Do not give up asking questions because you are far away.
  • In an emergency, do not delay calling the local emergency number while trying to reach the clinic.
  • Do not take medicine on your own where you are without asking the clinic.

Special note

If you came from abroad

If there is an emergency after you return to your country, first call the emergency number of the country you are in. For non-urgent questions you can call the clinic and ask for a video consultation; being far away does not change the fact that you are the clinic's patient.

Special note

If you are in a different time zone

Because the clinic's nurses and doctor's assistants can be reached 24 hours a day, you do not need to wait for morning in Turkey to call. If a symptom that worries you appears at night, you can call at that hour.

When should you call?

Call 112 first (if you are abroad, that country's emergency number)

  • Fainting: If you faint, call 112 first; if you are abroad, call the emergency number of the country you are in.

Call the clinic straight away

  • Heavy bleeding: Soaking 2–3 pads within one hour. A total of 2–3 pads over the whole day is normal.
  • Fever: A temperature of 38 °C or higher, or fever together with weakness.
  • Severe pain: Severe abdominal or back pain that does not ease with painkillers.
  • Foul-smelling discharge: Unusual, foul-smelling vaginal discharge.
  • Large clot: Passing a clot the size of a golf ball.

Call the clinic

  • If you are not sure whether you need to have a test done where you are, ask the clinic.
  • If you do not remember a special warning your doctor gave you about travel, call the clinic to find out again.
  • Dizziness or shivering: Dizziness, chills and shivering that do not pass.
  • Hard abdomen: The abdomen becoming hard, or clear tenderness when touched.
  • Burning on urination: Burning or stinging when passing urine.

SoftCare Clinic patients can reach the doctor's assistant or a nurse 24 hours a day; when needed, they contact the doctor. Call whenever you are unsure; what your own doctor tells you always comes first.

Frequently asked questions

Can you fly on the same day as an abortion?

Under SoftCare Clinic's rule, you can fly on the day of the abortion; a long road journey as a passenger is also possible on the same day. If there is an exceptional situation, the doctor explains the necessary warnings and precautions to the patient separately. A patient coming from abroad has the procedure on the first day and can return the next day.

Whom do I call if there is a problem after an abortion while I am abroad?

In an emergency, for example if you faint, first call the emergency number of the country you are in. In non-urgent situations, call SoftCare Clinic; the clinic's own patients can reach a nurse or the doctor's assistant 24 hours a day, and they contact the doctor when needed. A video consultation with the doctor can also be arranged.

I am in another city; what happens if I cannot come to the clinic for a check-up after an abortion?

At SoftCare Clinic there is no fixed check-up appointment given to everyone after an abortion; a detailed ultrasound check is done right after the procedure and most patients are not called back. If an assessment is needed and you cannot come, a video consultation with the doctor can be arranged; if a test is needed, it is arranged through the clinic's partner laboratory.
