Day 9 after abortion: shower, bath and pool

Day 9 · Recovery after abortion

On day nine the questions start to change. One of the questions often asked in these days is about water: washing, lying in a bath, swimming, getting into the pool on holiday.

The clinic's line on this is short. Showering is allowed; for the bath and the pool there is a fifteen-day wait. This page separates out which of them is possible today and gives the end of the restriction in days.

Short answer

Can I shower after an abortion, and when can I get into a bath or a pool?

You can shower after an abortion; SoftCare Clinic's rules set no waiting period for showering. Baths and pools, however, are avoided for 15 days after the procedure. On day 9 after an abortion the shower is allowed and the bath and pool restriction continues. Your doctor will tell you the time for a hammam, sauna or jacuzzi.

Today's topic on the calendar

Showering is allowed; for the bath and the pool you wait 15 days.

On the recovery calendar, the days when showering is allowed and the bath and pool restriction band lasting until day 15 are highlighted.

Can you shower after an abortion?

You can. Our clinic's rules after an abortion clearly list showering as allowed; there is nothing to stop you showering on day nine.

The clinic has no written limit on water temperature or how long you shower. If you have any hesitation about this, you can ask your doctor.

When does the bath and pool ban end?

The clinic's rule for the bath and the pool is 15 days. Today is day nine, so this restriction continues for a while longer.

The rule covers both the bath at home and the pool at a residential complex, hotel or gym. The measure is the number of days since the procedure; the type of pool does not change the period.

Even for a short time, or only to put your legs in, the clinic's written rule contains no exception. If you are unsure about something, ask your doctor first.

Is the rule different for the sea?

It is. The clinic sets a separate rule for the sea: day ten at the earliest and with a vaginal tampon. Day nine is too early for the sea as well; the details are on tomorrow's page.

What is allowed on day nine?

  • Shower: allowed.
  • Bath: not until 15 days have passed.
  • Pool: not until 15 days have passed.
  • Sea: tomorrow at the earliest, with the tampon rule.
  • Hammam, sauna, jacuzzi: ask your doctor first.

Do today

  • Shower as you normally do.
  • Mark day 15 on your calendar for the bath and the pool.
  • If you are planning a hammam or sauna, consult your doctor first.

Don't do today

  • Do not fill the bath and sit in it.
  • Do not go into a pool, even briefly.
  • Do not treat a jacuzzi the same as a shower.
  • Do not swim in the sea today.

Special note

Hammam, sauna and jacuzzi

The clinic's written rules list the shower, the bath, the pool and the sea; the hammam, sauna and jacuzzi are not on this list. Your doctor will tell you personally when you can go back to these. Do not go without asking.

When should you call?

Call 112 first (if you are abroad, that country's emergency number)

  • Fainting: If you faint, call 112 first; if you are abroad, call the emergency number of the country you are in.

Call the clinic straight away

  • Heavy bleeding: Soaking 2–3 pads within one hour. A total of 2–3 pads over the whole day is normal.
  • Fever: A temperature of 38 °C or higher, or fever together with weakness.
  • Severe pain: Severe abdominal or back pain that does not ease with painkillers.
  • Foul-smelling discharge: Unusual, foul-smelling vaginal discharge.
  • Large clot: Passing a clot the size of a golf ball.

Call the clinic

  • If you accidentally got into a bath or a pool, let the clinic know; your doctor will tell you what to do.
  • Dizziness or shivering: Dizziness, chills and shivering that do not pass.
  • Hard abdomen: The abdomen becoming hard, or clear tenderness when touched.
  • Burning on urination: Burning or stinging when passing urine.

SoftCare Clinic patients can reach the doctor's assistant or a nurse 24 hours a day; when needed, they contact the doctor. Call whenever you are unsure; what your own doctor tells you always comes first.

Frequently asked questions

How many days after an abortion can you bathe?

If by bathing you mean showering, under SoftCare Clinic's rules you can shower after an abortion. Bathing in a tub is different: the bath is avoided for 15 days after the procedure. If your doctor set another period for you, you follow the period they gave.

When can you go into a pool after an abortion?

SoftCare Clinic asks that you do not go into a pool for 15 days after an abortion. This period is the same for outdoor and indoor pools. If your spotting continues when the fifteen days are up, or your doctor has set a personal restriction for you, ask your doctor before going back to the pool.

Can you go to a sauna or hammam after an abortion?

The clinic's rules after an abortion set no written period for the hammam, sauna or jacuzzi; the rules cover the shower, bath, pool and sea. So your doctor will tell you when you can go to a hammam or sauna. Until that is decided, sticking to the shower is the option consistent with the clinic's rules.
